The Kyiv edition of NASA's International Space Apps Challenge, the world's largest annual space and science hackathon.
About
Space Apps Kyiv is the local host of the NASA International Space Apps Challenge, a global hackathon in which teams use open data from NASA and its partners to build solutions to real challenges in space and on Earth over a single weekend. The Kyiv edition is organised by its local lead, Roman Malkevych, himself a former hackathon participant who went on to run the Ukrainian stage.
Ukrainian teams have repeatedly excelled on the global stage. In the 2024 edition, in which more than 90,000 people in about 10,000 teams took part worldwide, the Kyiv team NVS-know was among the ten global winners, Ukraine's third global victory. In 2023, Storm Prophet won "Best Use of Data" for a project that predicts solar storms using NASA data, and in 2020 the FireWay team from Dnipro won "Best Use of Technology".
Why we highlight it
Space Apps Kyiv is not part of the Recovery of Ukrainian Astronomy. We include it here to give European colleagues a sense of the variety and energy of Ukraine's astronomy and space community: alongside the academic recovery, a young, international and highly competitive scene of engineers, developers and space enthusiasts.
