Space Radio for Ukraine

About the project

Space Radio for Ukraine is realised by the German Centre for Astrophysics (DZA) and DESY in cooperation with Ukrainian and international partners. Its goal is to bring affordable educational radio telescopes into schools and universities across Ukraine. In the first stage, educational institutions from Kyiv, Odesa, Lviv and Kharkiv were invited to take part.

The project builds a network of trained teachers who can assemble and use the radio telescopes on their own, in teaching and in passing the knowledge on. Through them, students and school pupils gain hands-on experience with radio astronomy, modern radio-frequency technology and data analysis.

Every participant receives a complete educational kit with all accompanying materials: technical documentation, assembly and setup instructions, and ready-made presentation slides that can be used directly in the classroom.

The project runs in partnership with the National Centre "Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine" and the Institute of Geodesy of Lviv Polytechnic National University, and with the support of the Ukrainian Astronomical Association (UAA). We are sincerely grateful to the Dr. Hans Riegel Foundation for its generous support of the project and of STEM education in general.

Together with our network of partners we are working to bring the project to further institutions in Ukraine. We see it as a pilot initiative with great potential: if it succeeds, it can be scaled to other educational institutions in Ukraine and beyond, building a wide network of schools and educators who use radio astronomy as a tool of modern education and science outreach.
